At least one group organizing anti-government trucker protests in Canada is canceling the event, citing “multiple security breaches.”
The somewhat misleadingly named “Canadian Unity Convoy for Freedom – Freedom Convoy” is a one-year gathering of a similar protest that took place in 2022, with truckers expressing their dissatisfaction with the country’s mandatory Covid-19 vaccinations.
The protests were subsequently criminalized and the organizers were threatened with criminal charges.
10-7 until further notice
A year later, a second protest was planned for February 17-20 – now it has been cancelled.
“As a result of these security breaches, which are beyond our control, I cannot in good conscience guarantee public safety as promised, nor can I guarantee other National Team Canada Unity Freedom Convoy partners who might be considered convoy organizers to be protected from prosecution under with Ontario’s Bill 100 Act,” wrote James Bauder, one of the group’s organizers, in a Facebook post.
The post has already been removed from the platform.
“As a result, Canada’s Unity for Freedom Convoy – Freedom Convoy will remain Officially 10-7 until further notice,” he added. For those unaware, 10-7 is a radio code used by the Citizen Band (CB) and Canadian Police to describe being logged off or out of service.
Bauder did not go into detail about the nature of these security breaches, so we don’t know if there are any viruses (opens in a new tab) or malware. When he contacted RegisterBauder was not available for further comment. The publication recalls that Bauder was arrested in February 2020 during anti-vaccine protests that escalated into violence in Ottawa.
But other people don’t seem so keen to end it yet.
“Many people and groups are involved. The 2023 World Unity Convoy has not been canceled,” Freedom Convoy participant Ron Clark told CBC via email. Tyson Billings, another participant, confirmed this, saying, “I don’t know if anything else is going to Ottawa or not, but the main convoy – the World Unity Convoy – is about unity and bringing people together.”
